Description: The JAE Youth Apprentice Program is designed to educate local youth in the art of dance, specifically Haitian Folkloric and Modern, while fostering resilient character traits through social connection and movement. JAE views dance as a profound form of healing. The program includes a vital Social Emotional Component that centers on self-awareness, confidence, and connection amongst peers. The Youth Program's curriculum is infused with the signature choreographic style of Artistic Director Jean Appolon, which elegantly fuses traditional Haitian folkloric dance with two renowned modern techniques:
Horton Technique: Developed by Lester Horton and popularized by the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater, this technique focuses on a progressive series of exercises designed to develop a dancer’s strength, flexibility, and musicality.
Dunham Technique: Created by Katherine Dunham, this technique is rooted in Caribbean and African cultures, emphasizing a polyrhythmic style of continual motion.
Please note: Youth Apprentices are asked to attend at least 8 of the 9 rehearsals and must be available to perform at the JAE Dance Center on Friday, April 3rd from 6-7:30pm.
“Thanks to JAE, my passion for dance was reignited, and I learned the importance of community and collaboration. JAE gave me a place to grow, to be supported. Whenever I have time to come back for a Saturday class, I’m always filled with excitement - to see familiar faces, to be welcomed back into this incredible community, and to be surrounded by such exuberant positivity.”
